Rural Development Department

 

Introduction

 

The Department of Rural Development were earlier variously known as community development and National Extention Service Department, Dehat Sudhar Department and it started functioning in Ladakh  district in the middle nineteen fifties.  There was only one block in whole of district with headquarter at Leh.  Two more blocks called Nefa “A” type blocks were created at Nyoma and Nobra in 1965.  Khaltsi block was created in 1974 and in 1977 Durbuk block was carved out of Nyoma block.  The sixth block Kharu has been carved out of Leh block in 1999-2000. There are 68 Panchayats in the District and the projected population is around 1.17 lacs.

Aims and Objectives

 

During the early phase of its existence the main thrust areas were on extension works. The grass root level workers known as Village level workers (Gram Sivak) were responsible for extension works in agriculture and allied sector.  The Village level workers of those days rendered valuable service in popularizing/Introducing vegetable and other high yielding varieties of improved seeds and in use of chemical fertilizers and other improved scientific practices. With the passage of time the emphasis has shifted and at present the Rural Development Department is exclusively responsible for execution of various poverty alleviation programmes under two broad categories of self employment scheme and wage employment scheme sponsored by the Central Government.

 

  1.    The following Centrally sponsored schemes are under implementation in the District:-

 

I.                   Employment Assurance Scheme.

II.                Jawahar Gram Simridhi Yojna.

III.             Indra Awas Yojna.

 

In addition to above three centrally sponsored scheme Border Area Development Programmes, also a centrally sponsored scheme is also under implementation in the four border of blocks Khaltsi, Nobra, Nyoma and Durbuk.  The department also executes works under constituency development schemes of   Member Parliament , Member Legislative Assemblies/Council and councillors of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Devlopement Council.
